Question:
why do people shop at sainsbury's, etc.?
2008-07-28 07:25:21 UTC
i mean the price rises are outrageous. a few months ago i could buy 1 kg of brown rice at £1, now it's £1.44. a week ago a can of cheapest tuna was £0.72, now it's £0.99, in some cases the price goes up by nearly 50 % by the next day. and wages do not ! so let's stop shopping there, if everyone did it, they'd have to reevaluate their pricing policy. and i do not just mean sainsbury's, every giant ripping people's pockets off.

The truth is that foods that are derived from grain are suffering from increase in the price of oil. Wheat and rice, and in the US, corn prices have been forced upward by the demand for bio-fuels, as pressure to find alternatives to oil makes grain derived fuel cost effective. This affects not only raw grain prices but also things like bread and crumpets. Unfortunately, that means meat and dairy products are rising as well as the predominant cost in raising live stock is feed. There should not be a correlation with tuna prices other than the cost of running a fishing boat. This too is linked to the cost of oil.

Yes, I think that the supermarkets, like the oil companies, are guilty of passing on costs very quickly but keeping reductions to themselves. But recently the rises have not all been in their control. The only solution is to eat less processed food, and try too source as much as you can from farmers markets to cut out the middle men.

I have stopped shopping at Sainsburys. I just felt I was being ripped off. I get what I can from my local Co-op / Tescos. I buy what is on offer and make do. My meals are planned around what is on offer. I get my meat from the butchers, i would rather pay him than rip off supermarket. I buy things like bleach / toilet paper etc when they are on buy one get one free offers. I am lucky though I do not have to shop for a family, just for two.

Presumably, Sainsbury's are as exposed to rises in the price of rice as any other store, so where would you go instead? I find Waitrose offers good quality merchandise at reasonable prices.

i agree with you this time last year you could go to tesco(the worsed of the worsed) get a big bag of pasta for £1 its nearly £3 now .

its a disgrace when i had my baby, formula milk was £5.70something its nearly £8 now (before anyone starts slagging me off saying it would be cheaper to breast feed i tryed and could'nt breast feed my baby as she was a special care baby) i only stopped buying formula 6 months ago.

how do they expect us to live? our weekly shopping bill used to be £50 for 3 of us it £80 now just for the basics such as milk, cheese, bread, cereal.

i feel sorry for larger familys who have more mouths to feed and people with less money even value food have gone up in price.

lets boycott the evil that is the money grabbing supermarket.

Tesco have reduced a lot of prices lately, their fruit and veg prices in particular, but the offers change week to week.

I know! It's scandalous. I remember buying 4 crumpets one evening for 64p... The following morning they were 84p! In the space of 12 hours.

I totally totally agree with you but the nearest supermarket to me is Sainsbury's (crappy i know) and no matter how stubborn I am I'm gonna have to cave and get me my bread and milk from there anyway...
