I received a christmas gift from my girlfriend a few weeks ago. Included in this gift was a box of candy canes. I just ate one of them tonight, and it was strangely chewy, and it was hollow inside. I checked the expiration date on the back of the box and it said...

Best before August 15th, 2008!!!!

Could I get food poisoning from that nasty old candy cane? I feel kinda nauseous, but it could just be because of how disgusted I am that I just ate a 3-year-old candy cane. :P Do you think I have food poisoning?

Well receiving a three year old candy cane isn't a very nice present at all, but as for food poisoning you should be all clear, the nausea your feeling is most likely due to the fact that you noticed the expiration date and are feeling more paranoid about the fact that you might get food poisoning from this, although you might just get diarrhea tomorrow but that unlikely, nothing serious to worry about..

that probably was not the best thing to do but nothing is going to poison you from eating it ? but why would she give that to you lol ? the sickness is from you thinking you have been poisoned so your brain starts believing it making you feel nauseous ? do not worry about that candy cane , it is all in your head !

I would be more curious about why my girlfriend gave me old candy canes as a gift.

Sugar doesn't go bad. You are fine, it's just all in your head. You cannot get food poisoning from candy/sugar. The "best by" date is just because its more fresh before then not because it is "bad" and will poison you.

your nauseous feeling is coming from your subconscious. I would not eat them. if you open something like candy and it sticks to the wrapper, don't eat it. that is common knowledge. I would let the girl know though that the candy was outdated. She probably got it someplace like big lots, or something like that. i don't buy food from big lots due to most of it being old.

no, you have 3 year old candy cane.

Exactly what in that cane do you think will spoil?

It is made of flavored sugar and sugar never spoils.

It may get stale and in your candy canes case, it reacted to the humidity and collapsed in on itself but it is still only flavored sugar.

You are grossing yourself out for nothing.

The only answer I can give you is there are better things to worry about. But...no...maybe diarrhea. Next time you have a question like this ask yourself "What would the Situation do?"

Why would your girlfriend give you three years old candy? Is she crazy? No offense...

Very highly unlikely

The nausea you feel is from knowing that your girlfriend is trying to kill you!
