So, i just LOVE my espresso, but really cant afford the prices for a good machine right now, so i decided to get the lil $30 one at walmart to learn on.
Any suggestions on where one might learn all they can bout making espresso? Like an espresso "primer"? A website perhaps??
Thanx!!

For the art of good espresso, you need the right type of coffee and the right machine. Go to your local Italian supermarket and purchase a stove top espresso maker and a good quality brand of espresso. The brand I like is called illy. Then you twist off the bottom part of the pot. Remove the funnel insert. Place very cold water inside the bottom part till the knob. Place the funnel part inside and put the coffee in, Screw on the top part and place it on the burner, at a med heat. For the first time you use the espresso pot you need to boil water first and then you can enjoy your fresh cup of espresso. CIAO!

Don't buy a machine! Get a stovetop espresso pot. They are inexpensive and work wonderfully. I LOVE mine, and I think it makes better espresso than the high-tech espresso machine I previously owned.

A stovestop espresso maker is an hourglass-shaped metal device that unscrews in the middle. You fill the bottom half up with water, fill the center filter with espresso ground coffee, put it back together and heat it up on the stove. It brews faster than my regular drip coffee maker! And the espresso is divine.

Most of us Italians use the Moka Express stove top coffeemaker by Bialetti - but there are many imitations, so make sure you buy the one with the little man design on the lower part of the pot.

Directions are easy; just fill lower container with water upto the valve.

Fill filter with ground coffee - don't pack - and screw top of upper container tightly closed.

Set on stove, and wait for the coffee to emerge and fill the upper part of the coffee pot.

My favourite is Lavazza Gold - I travel a lot and I can't always find Illy - and my Moka Express goes wherever I go.

It should be every day and kept washed and clean. The say the longer the Moka Express is in use, the better the coffee.

If unused for a period of time, throw away the first batch of coffee.

Don't bother assembling the pot closed in between uses - it's better to let it dry out completely.

And don't ever put it in the dishwasher!

You don't need all that equipment. Use French roast or espresso coffee and make like standard coffee. Put a little milk in a cup with your sugar and cook till foamy in microwave...30 seconds to 1 minute. You've steamed the milk. Pour your coffee into that and WAH LAH! Cappachinno!

I'm sorry, but I don't think the Wal-Mart espresso machine is going to give you the results that you are looking for. Have you tried the stove-top style? They are inexpensive, and traditional.

I grew up on the stuff, I use a french press pot. You can get one for about $15 in any kitchen store. I like Illy or Medaglia d'Oro coffee. Bustelo is Spanish style and a bit too strong for my likes. Serve with a little anisette and a piece of lemon rind. A biscotti would be a nice accompaniment
