Question:
Why is Marks and Spencers food so great and healthy but NOT AFFORDABLE?!?
2008-02-25 06:30:08 UTC
Lets face it. They do "healthy ready meals." But at a cost of like £4 each.

So, If I eat 3 of these meals aday at £12, and my man and daughter does, thats £36 to eat 3meals for 3 of us...

If only I could.

I do not have the time to cook from scratch twice or 3 times a day, and there food is great.

Why is it that only rich people CAN BE HEALTHY IN UK???

In many other countries to be healthy and eat veg and fruit is sooo cheap, but here in the UK, you have to have alot of money or you have to by junk food at £1 a meal..and thats full of additives and rubbish.

Isnt it annoying.

I used to do two jobs and ran my home as a guesthouse. I had two young children and a husband who didn't give a toss or help one iota but I still managed to cook three meals a day from scratch every day. It's just a question of getting organised and freezing the excess so that all you have to do is stick it in the microwave and heat it up again. M & S food is not healthy, it is full of excess fat and sugar, so don't be fooled into believing that load of hype. There was a programme on it on Channel 4 the other week and I must admit I was shocked.

Eating healthily needn't be expensive or that time consuming. Pre-prepared meals aren't that healthy anyway no matter what it says on the front of the box. If you look on the back it's full of salts, additives, fat etc.

I'm a single parent, I have a full time job & I cook. I don't cook three times a day though & I don't know anyone who does. Breakfast is always cereal & fruit, lunch is often sandwiches & dinner tonight is a stir fry. It's just a question of planning your meals really. I have also got my kids cooking now so that takes all the onus off me. I don't know if your daughter is old enough to help but could your husband help? Another thing I do is cook up my own "ready meals" & store them in the freezer. I often make extra at dinner so it can be frozen as a "ready meal". Because I work funny hours it's good to know my kids can stick something decent in the microwave rather than the crap supermarkets sell. I also use my slow cooker for making soups & stews. Cheap, filling & healthy meals.

They may say healthy ready meals but how many ready meals are healthy? Their food is expensive in general I think even though I believe it is quite nice have never bought any of their food so i can't comment on that.

Trust me when I say no-one cooks 3 meals a day unless they don't have anything else to do,hell who eats 3 meals a day?

If you don't have a lot of time stir-frys can be healthy and quick and not expensive.

It is pathetic that it is cheaper to buy some crappy burger that you can re-heat in a minute rather than food that actually has got some nutrition and good for you.

Yes M&S meals are great but then they are of high quality. You get what you pay for these days. You cannot expect to get Champagne if you are only prepared to pay Beer money.

Who, in their right mind, would have 4 cooked meals a day?

It is much cheaper to cook from scratch and it doesn't have to take long either. How do you think people managed before ready meals came along? They were certainly a lot healthier as there is a lot of junk in the cheaper ready meals.

Go to a local fruit and veg stall at a market, you can buy a mountain of salad and vegetables there for £1, I know because I used to survive on £4 a week food money, I couldn't afford meat but I ate enough veggies to sink a battle ship for that money. Market stalls are the way to go. Marks and Spencer meals are great for a treat, but not affordable every day.

Everyone has time to cook from scratch. When you have a couple of hours, make lots of food and freeze it. You will save money and you really shouldn't be relying on M&S for food, it's a luxury to not cook these days. I don't find it annoying. I held down a full time job, raised three kids and never bought ready made because there wasn't any back then. Cook your own food!

M&S ready meals aren't any healthier than other ready meals - they just have better marketing.

The Sainsbury's basics range of ready meals costs less than £1 and it was found recently by analysts that they were healthier than premium Waitrose equivalents - and they contain no additives. I buy the macaroni cheese one for my kids occasionally becuase they contain less fat and salt than the premium range equivalents (including those specialy made for kids).

It is cheaper making food from scratch - I make batches of lasagne or chilli and freeze portions of it which helps when I'm too busy to cook.

I have looked around the three M&S near me. Their "Healthy" meals are usually anything but healthy. They are loaded with fats, sugars, and salt. I have a friend who works in a factory that makes food for M&S (among others) I will NEVER eat a meal like this again after what he told me.

Simple, well cooked food at home will suffice. It isn't difficult and the food you prepare yourself will not have all the preservatives etc in. It is not difficult.

I sort of see what your saying - but.........

I'm a single parent of a 7 yr old and I make sure that we eat good meals every night for tea and it doesn't cost the earth - in fact I think it costs more to eat junk food!!!

Bacon ribs, boiled potatos and Cabbage - cheap

Spaghetti bol - cheap

Chops, mash and gravey - cheap

Jacket spud, savoury riceand corn on the cob - cheap

I could go on forever!!

You don't have to shop in M and S for good food......just use your imagination

There are many healthy fruits and vegetables. Fresh vegetables like broccoli and kale contain calcium and are packed with fiber.

tell me about it!! and they wonder why there are so many health problems. I have often wondered this! fruit and veg is expensive, takes a lot of time to prepare etc. you always find that salads and the healthier low fat options always cost more. its ridiculous!!

Are you aware that there are other grocery retailers available? Or does your employer only pay you in Marks and Spencer vouchers?
