Mayonnaise is more versatile, and you can make Thousand Island dressing or fry dipping sauce if you add ketchup. It's necessary for sandwiches if you are making tunafish, and potato salad wouldn't be the same. Miracle Whip would be the best substitute if mayonnaise disappeared, but I assume you mean all mayonnaise-like substances. But I still love mustard on hamburgers and hot dogs. You need both to make deviled eggs or egg salad (at least at my house) so I guess it's a tossup there.

Mustard

As far as taste goes it is up to the individual. From a health stand the mustard wins, mayonnaise is made with egg yolks and oil so you are dealing with cholesterol and fat.

Mustard does not carry any of the problems that mayo does.

So if you like mayo as with most foods just practice moderation.

I prefer the pungent snappy taste of mustard BUT if someone gave me a small dish of home made mayonnaise (or even better aïoli) and a steamed artichoke, I would die and go to heaven!

I usually end up with mayo but agree that both are fantastic together. Mayo is more bland and mustard has a tangy, so choice may be based on what you are putting the item over.

Unfortunately I usually gravitate towards the Mayonnaise, however, I love mustard, especially Dijon, and it is the best choice if you are watching your weight!

Try mixing them both (a little more mustard than mayo). It's pretty good. I used to use that as a sauce for Chicken Nuggets.

I'd have to go with mustard. Mustard can come in spicy, bland, and other varieties. Mayo can end up curdling....ewwww

It really depends on the circumstance. If you were making hotdogs, then definitely mustard. If you were making chicken salad, then mustard wouldn't be so great.
