potatoes soften and turn a yellowy colour after being peeled.. and if really bad they will start to smelly. if the potato is good and has black spots just cut them out with a knife after peeling..

I think that if you have a potato with round black spots on the outside, they are bad. They will be rotten on the inside or have black spots inside too. Throw it away, before it makes all of them bad. They will get wet and smell bad too. The juice that runs from a bad potato will make the others bad.

Yes - you are correct, black spots on potatoes are bad. Toss the whole thing out - potatoes are too cheap to risk getting sick over.
Also avoid potatoes that have any green color on the skin.
