Question:
Is it okay to use wax paper when you bake?

Because every time I use it to line my cookie sheets, it creates gray smoke-like stuff in my house, no alarms go off, I don't think it's hurting anyone, it's just annoying and I'd like to know why it does that. Does anyone know?

Yes, it's fine to use wax paper, but you could use parchment paper as an alternative. The roll I have right now is made by Reynolds. It contains no wax, so it has nothing to smoke up. I've also seen it called baking paper.

Silicone silpat mats are nice, but they are a bit expensive, and you will probably want to get at least 3 of them.

because wax paper is paper covered in wax and it's melting in the oven. It's the same basically as eating a melted candle on your cookies.

Use parchment paper for lining cookie sheets instead. Or invest in a silpat mat for your baking. It's a silicone mat basically that nothing can stick to.

You should be using parchment paper instead.
