Question:
Canned Broth Past Expiration Date...Still Good?

My dog has been sick and not eating, so I'm making her white rice and was going to add some beef broth to it, but when I looked in the pantry, all the canned beef broth is expired (January 2009). Can I still use it even though it's past the "best by" date? I'm worried I'll make my dog sick, but my dad insists it's ok and is going to use it anyway.

Thanks

Check the can. If there is no sign of rust, or bulging around the seams, then it will be fine. If necessary, take the label off to have a better look. Once you've opened it, it should smell and taste fine, although sometimes the colour may be a bit duller that you would expect (can you get much duller than a beef broth though?).

Even if a can is WITHIN the best before date, if it has been dropped and the seam damaged, the contents can be bad.

It's more than a year out of date, so it is kind of borderline. I think you can still use it, but I would boil it first for 20 minutes or so, just to be sure. Keep the cover on the pot to make sure you don't boil it all away. Then, of course, you have to let it cool before giving it to your dog, or you can add in a couple of ice cubes, which will both cool the broth and replace the water you lost while boiling.

Good luck, and I hope your dog feels better.

Well dogs eat a lot of things that are bad for them so old broth wont hurt her or him .

If it can be store in a can it is made to last a long time. I always find expired canned goods but they taste fine to me. Your dog will be fine they eat anything ( well my dogs do ) lol :)

It's sealed so it's fine. My mom has thrown out dosens of cans like that and my grandmaw yells at her for it. They are totaly fine. If not i'd be dead by now/

open the can and pour it into a class. if it passes the smell test and taste test then it should be ok

you should buy a new one so that it would not harm your dog
