When measuring water, one 250ml cup will weigh 250g. When using liquids this is a guide but its basically right. So one cup sauce would be close to 250g.
Other things can differ completely.
Most pasta in australia come in 500g packets so half a packet or about two handfuls should be fine. maybe three if large pasta.
If anyone uses the one cup weighs 250g for everything, just think how much space 250g of fairy floss would take up? Doesn't work does it.

250g is a standard size cup/small mug....like you drink your tea/coffee out of....so 250 grams of small pasta would be one cup full. It will be harder to measure the larger pasta, like shells, but a "good rule of thumb" I use with any loose pasta is two hands full per person. [I am female so not enormous hands..lol] I don't have details of your recipe but an equal amount of the sauce sounds like too much - however if you have any left over you can always freeze it. Happy cooking!
