I was looking at the menu for the restaurant "Le Bernardin" and a few menu items were followed by the term "supplement" and a price. What does this mean?

Good question!!!

"Supplement" these days means that the term "a la Carte" has been eliminated, as a LOT of people do not comprehend that French term, of "Only, or One dish, alone"

Supplement these days means that: (and I'm using this as ONLY an example)

You go to Ruth's Chris' Steakhouse:

A Rib Eye is 39 bucks.............PERIOD. That means you get a steak, and THAT IS IT.....

Supplements mean that you have to order "a la Carte", or separately from the menu........

So: Steak, Prix Fixe (that means a fixed price, but STEAK only)

Supplements: baked potato, salad, etc.........BTW, at baked tater at Ruth's is 7 bucks.........I can buy 20 pounds of taters for 3 bucks, and go to our butcher, Tip Top Market, which has Harris Ranch Organic Beef and get 2 Rib Eyes for 35 bucks.....and fix them myself......to my liking......Enjoy!!

Extra cost for high end items that need to be upcharged on top of the pre fix price so the restaurant makes their costs. You will find items like lobster, caviar or foie gras usually have a supplemental charge.

Le Bernardin is top notch and any extra charge is worth it.

Well it's the kind of thing i have come to expect from people with too much money, but no class. . . . . I hear people say that kind of thing in many "swanky" places, many people with money (and no class) think THEY don't look bad when they say that kind of thing becasue they are not poor so they can't possibly be scummy, they are wrong. Every time i have been abused at work and sworn at it really is either a psychotic drug addict or social misfit, OR a really rich person. Regular people seem more self aware, and aware of others. . .

It's an extra charge...you'll see it on menu's with a set price for a fixed number or courses, but certain options will have that extra charge because of the ingredients used, where they have to charge slightly more than the other options.

I think its extra cost for rare or pricey food ingredients, but I may be wrong.
