I just bought two fresh coconuts and came home and opened them. The smell was repugnant, and the taste was something like a mixture of lemon flavored ammonia or mop-n-glo. My roomate said he remembers coconut tasting that way, but he never did like it. However, I said I remember as a kid eating raw coconut and it wasn't sweet, but it actually tasted like coconut. So, is it really supposed to taste rancid like ammonia? Or did I buy bad coconuts?

no.

fresh coconut should taste sweet and aromatic.

thats for young coconuts, and it looks milky clear.

The old coconut the juice are less clear but no lumps.

and have creamy scent and taste but somehow you can still smell the slight sweetness.

the sweet smell is lighter than young coconuts.

I think you bought a very very very old coconut at the stage of fermenting.

The milk can have a little bit of a soapy flavor and odor, but what you're describing sounds like it was rancid.

I would think you got bad ones, the only other possibility I can think of off hand is that you may have had something sweet right before trying them.
