Question:
Exploding Ketchup Bottle?

I was out to eat and when I went to open the ketchup bottle, the ketchup exploded out all over me and the table. It continued to bubble over like a volcano for several minutes. The waitress said it was because it was sitting in the sun too long. Is that the case or is this some kind of prank?

I don’t think it’s a prank.

I’m sorry, I don’t believe that story for one second. Ketchup has an acid base - tomatoes. AND it has sweeteners - sugars and/or or corn syrup.

As sure as I’m sitting here typing this answer, I’ll bet that place ”marries” ketchup bottles AND I’ll bet a little more those “married” bottles were not rotated.

“Married” means at the end of the evening, the bottles on the tables are brought to a table and

A] one started bottle is poured into another started bottle.

B] AND/OR a large can of ketchup is opened and that new ketchup was poured on top of the older ketchup.

C] AND/OR the ketchup in that "married" bottle fermented. The ketchup in that bottle “soured” or turned bad.

D] AND/OR those married bottles are not put on the tables to make sure that older ketchup is used first.

OR the company shipping the ketchup, didn’t rotate the ketchup it received from the warehouse where the ketchup was stored.

OR the manufacturer of the ketchup, allowed something to happen or didn’t to get past “Quality Control”.

Thank you for asking your question. I enjoyed taking the time to answer your question. You did a great job - not only for your information, but for every other person interested in reading my answer.

I wish you well!

This does really happen, more often to the wait staff than the patrons. Restaurants and cafes don't stock nearly enough whole, unopened bottles to give every customer a fresh bottle. To save cost and conserve ketchup, they give the customers the impression they're getting a new bottle to themselves by refilling it from a dispenser. The added ketchup doesn't mix evenly with the remains already in the bottle, so sometimes you can see striations of lighter colors where the water and vinegar has separated a bit from the thicker ingredients.

I couldn't say exactly why this happens, about the pressures and reactions between different consistencies, but ketchup has such a long shelf life that it couldn't be because it reached expiration date. If it were that old, it would be too visible to the customer to present them with the bottle.

No that happened to me and the restaurant paid for my cleaning, I opened the bottle and it was like you shook a soda and opened it. You realize ketchup stains like nobodies business......only thing I don't remember it bubbling over. It did explode though. If Ashton Kucher did come out from the back it probably wasn't a prank lol

It could be, ketchup has acid so if you heat it up it can explode. But what I think happened is that, the restaurant you went to keeps filling up old bottles and not rinsing and fully drying them out before they put in new ketchup. I have seen this many times before, to be honest if they are not doing some basic safety, where the customer can see, imagine what their kitchen is like!

No, she's right, to a degree. I used to work in a restaurant where we had to fill the bottles of ketchup everynight, we just added to the ones sitting on the table, and sometimes they went bad and when they did, they went BOOM

lol. I think its right about staying in the sun for too long -- its the opposite of putting a drink (lets say Coke) into a freezer. When you take it out it busts because of the particles cramped inside just waiting to explode.

It's true, pressure can build up enough to cause a "volcano" effect when opened. Who paid for the cleaning of your clothes?

i'm guessing the ketchup may be expired already. since food breathes' when it's spoilt or with molds and stuff and maybe that's why the bottle exploded because of excess air IN the bottle.
