Does elk taste like steak or does it have its own gamey taste to it?

my cousins bf went hunting and he killed some elk and he wants to cook it up on the grill but i never had elk he said it tastes like steak so i wont notice a diffrence any you guys had it before.

it doesnt taste like beef. it tastes like elk. i was raised on elk meat, and honestly beef steak makes me feel ill when i eat very much of it. but i can eat elk all day. i like it alot better then any other meat i have had.

but you have to be careful with the elk meat too, if the animal wasnt taken care of properly in the field it can get a weird taste to it. if it wasnt clean properly and in a short time. if it wasnt hung up long enough...or too long. most of the time when people say a game animal doesnt taste good the animal wasnt prepared right.

elk tends to be tougher then beef, with less fat, but that depends on the animal as well.

one of my favorite dinners, take a big chunk of elk, put it in a crock pot on low early in the morning cook it on low until about an hour before you eat dinner . then add a little seasoning, taters, carrots and some chopped onions and cook on high the last hour. keep adding water to keep it from drying out while it cooks. maybe a little meat tenderizer too.

It has a unique taste. The meat is a little bit sweeter than beef, but similar. Mainly, it depends upon how it is cooked. You can spice it or put on a sauce to make it taste alot like beef if you want to. It is good, but can be tough if it comes from a bull elk, usually does have more tender meat. enjoy

it has a different taste than beef. i was raised eating elk and i would rather eat elk than beef. i hope you like. now if you ever had muley that is some gamey stuff. i just made a some jerky and man was it gamey.

It has its own unique taste. Its not steak but not really gamey either. its very lean so if he overcooks it at all it wont be so good. when done properly, it is great stuff

Elk is real good, but it does not taste like beef. Just like turkey does not taste like chicken

Doesn't taste quite like beef, but its not gamey either. It tastes so much better than venison. I was a little leery of it at first, but believe me, its good.

apparently i'm the only one here that thinks this: It's Nasty!! growing up we had to eat deer, elk, and antelope...i hate all of them...however i'm not a big fan of beef either...lol..i have to be in the mood for it...good luck and hope you like it...
